Stiffers Beware
I delivered for Papa Johns as a second job a few years ago and it sucked when people stiffed you on a tip. Checks written out the exact amount, people thinking the delivery surcharge is your tip, etc. Gas prices now at over $4/gallon I can't see how you guys do it! Anyways, my brother and I created a website where delivery drivers can mark non-tipping houses on a map. www.goodtipbadtip.com My brother still delivery drives for a local cafe that is open until 4am. His area is HUGE and people every now and then don't tip! He just blacklists them and doesn't go there again. So, check it out mark some houses and let everyone know there is a consequence to not tipping! | | Friday, May 23rd, 2008 | 10:19 pm [metis2be]

I have a question about insurance. I was forced to quit since my father didn't know if insurance would cover any accidents I had while I was driving on the job, since that might count as commercial work. Would I have to have some special type of insurance for commercial driving, or since I was only working part time would regular insurance cover it? This was one of my favorite jobs of all time since I got to drive around (which I love) listening to music in a rich, safe part of town that tipped well. My last night working I averaged $23 an hour after tips/commission and I'm terribly bored now since I'm only working one job. | | Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 | 12:24 am [vitadox]

Pizza delivery, is there a better job? I drive around, listen to music, smoke, and make an average of 15 dollars an hour. I can't think of a job I'd like more. Uhh, to make this more of a discussion, for the former deliverers: how is it transitioning to a different job after doing delivery? As of right now I can't imagine working a desk-job, or even a cashier job; getting paid 8 dollars an hour and being miserable. Sorry for the poorly worded entry. No sleep and lack of motivation to make it readable. | | Monday, November 20th, 2006 | 1:00 am [angelordevil85]

Hi there all! I know this community hasn't been posted to in about 6 months, but I just found it tonight and wanted to see if people are still watching. I'm a delivery driver in the UK for Dominos. Been in the job for about 6 weeks now, and I love it. I'm one of only three female drivers, so have to listen to lots of boytalk! Only bugbears are not being able to see house numbers in the dark (majority of my shifts/our deliveries being after 5pm when of course it's dark), and having to go to some of the dodgiest places in the town. You know, the kind where you actually fear for your life! Would be great to chat to some drivers! Current Mood: sleepy | | Tuesday, May 9th, 2006 | 12:58 pm [ibreaktheglass]

Bah.
I have a real problem with customers ordering pizza and not coming to the door when I get there. Not being prepared in general seems to be an issue. I have this regular customer.....he orders pretty much every Sunday. Every time I deliver to this guy, I end up standing at the door for an extrordinarily long time. Knocking..... door bell.... anger..... more knocking..... no response. I don't know why I ever even bother to knock, because I always end up having to call him and tell him that I'm standing at his door. As if that weren't enough, the wait continues. He invites me inside (which I hate), and scrambles to find his checkbook as he explains to me for the hundredth time, "I was down in the basement. That surround sound down there is so loud, ya cant hear nothin! What was the total again?" I hate this guy. He's a 2 dollar and change tip, (which is more than I can say for some of my other customers) but he's just not worth my time, especially during a rush. So I come back from a run on Sunday to find that I'll be paying him another visit. There's another delivery down the road so I pack them both up, and take the further one first. I ponder giving him a "courtesy call" to let him know I'll be there in 5 minutes. Then he throws me this curveball: I get to he house, and he isn't even there. His wife comes to the door. She's on the phone. She doesn't know where her husband is, and she doesn't have any money to pay me. She calls various neighbors in an attempt to find him. She calls his cell phone. It's in the house. His car is in the driveway, yet he is nowhere to be found. So I basically stand there for a good 10 minutes while the search continues. Finally, she borrows money from one of her guests, sending me on my way with a whopping $1.11 to spare. Sadly, the very next delivery I took was one in which the customer fell asleep, and after much knocking I had to call her as well. She invites me in while she finds some money (surprise) and then has to find her glasses once she realizes that she cant tell if she's about to give me a $20 or a $50. *sigh* Why do people order pizza and then instantly forget? It's so frustrating.... The rest of my Sunday was pretty good though. Worked my first double in a long time, and made $135 in tips and commission. Can't complain about that. However... my Beretta is just about to hit 200,000 miles on the original engine/transmission. I am fearful for the inevitable fate that lies ahead. Maybe I should sell her while I still have a chance. I weep, for pizza delivery is killing my car. | 2:43 pm [sarah0852] |

Feel like making some real cash???
Papa John's drivers in New Orleans and the surrounding affected areas are making a BUTTLOAD of money right now. My boyfriend and I both worked for them before Hurricane Katrina. He in Metairie, in the fairly well-to-do area of town (he occasionally delivers to John Goodman), I in one of the suburbs to the west of the city (which is a huge area that covers 5 small conjoined towns, but there's only about 10% "bad" neighborhood total.) He went back to delivering in his neighborhood about 2 months ago and is rolling in dough...the money kind. His store is so busy that they can only make wings, cinnapies, thin crusts, and pan pizzas, because there's not enough time to slap dough. He brings home anywhere from $150-200/night (just in tips...that's not counting his hourly wage--they're paying $6+ an hour), working 11am-8pm. He works one 4 hour shift on Thursdays and still breaks $100 that night each week. basically, all other restaurants and grocery stores are still closing around 7-8pm, so if you want food after that, you have to get it delivered. His store stays open until 9-10pm. Yesterday he took 41 runs in his nine-hour shift. I've already got a full time job M-F, and I'm making really good salary at it, but I'm considering going back on the weekends...It's hard to pass up an extra $800-1600 a month for an extra 15-20 hours a week of work. | 1:10 pm [sweetyleaf]

~*~Hi~*~
I just joined this community. My husband works part time as a pizze driver...he also has a full time job outside of that. Although with him working as a pizza driver one can get sick of pizza after awhile. It is nice to see a community like this. Now only if I could ge thim to create a live journal and actually use it. Then he could join cool places like this. | | Sunday, September 11th, 2005 | 12:33 pm [johnthefilmer]

Blackjack Pizza is hiring delivery drivers. I've been working at King Soopers (grocery store) for almost a year and I hate it. I make $7.20 an hour, which turns into $5.55 an hour after union dues and taxes. Blackjack is offering $8-12 an hour. I'll be 16 soon, which is when I plan on turning in my application. As experienced delivery persons, would you suggest that I leave King Soopers in favor of Blackjack? Will I come out with more than $5.55 after tips, gas, and tax? Is it a tolerable job? I'm in high school, will I be able to get hours that fit with school/homework/social life? Anything else I need to know? | | Thursday, August 11th, 2005 | 5:21 pm [miss_manners]

Since I plan on having my store...
celebrate International Talk like a Pirate day I'd like suggestions. I'm getting the entire staff eyepatches, all the drivers Jolly Rogers to fly from their cars (either on the antenna or I'll have suction cup poles). I'm working on a pirate phone script. I want to offer a special Pirate Pizza, but what would be on that? Also, I want to offer a special, using said pizza, with lots of food so we can offer "a bounty that won't have you digging up yer buried treasure" | | Saturday, August 6th, 2005 | 1:57 am [rockrchik85] |
Hey, I just joined this community and I had a question to pose to all of you. A local pizza place is getting desperate for drivers, so I had a friend of mine that works there ask about the job for me. Apparently, the owner of the restaurant doesn't like to hire female drivers, because supposedly they get robbed and assaulted more, especially in the areas of Philadelphia that I would be delivering in. My questions are: 1. Has any females (or males that work with females) noticed that (females having more problems)? 2. Do I still go after the job, knowing that it's going to be harder to get the job since I'm female? Current Mood: curious | | Monday, June 27th, 2005 | 11:42 am [jack_maisie]

Delivery Music?
What does everyone here listen to while taking deliveries? I usually listen to talk radio, but my programs don't play on weekends so I'm trying to make a few compilation CDs to take with me to work. The problem with listening to music is that I constantly have to stop and start it because I'm always climbing in and out of my car. Do you guys have any suggestions? Not just artists, but specific songs too, since I'm trying to put together some CDs. | | Monday, June 13th, 2005 | 4:59 am [ace_brickman]

typical household in my delivery area.. with a major storm barreling through
Hey dear, the weather’s TERRIBLE! I know. i-is that the tornado siren? My goodness, yes it is! Guess we’re staying in, eh? Guess so. Let’s order a pizza, even though a tornado’s ripping through the countryside 5 miles away Yeah, those delivery guys would probably welcome some business, since the weather doesn’t affect the amount of time it takes for them to get here. [orders a pizza and is just quoted an hour delivery time over the phone]: What? It’s not even raining here! {multiply by about 32 in a two-hour timeframe} Current Mood: curious | | Sunday, June 5th, 2005 | 4:50 am [ace_brickman]

Anyone Else Here Deliver for Donato's?
If you’ve never heard of Donato’s, I’m not surprised. It’s a fairly small chain limited to about 75 or so stores in Ohio, Indianapolis Metro, some in FL, PA, and I think one in Amsterdam (think of the topping choices there ;)). Anyway, so I don’t double-post off the bat; Anyone else have the most troublesome time delivering to Post Offices? I gotta deliver to the central distribution ctr. in Indy, and some issues (on a weekly if not nightly basis) consist of: • calling back & changing/adding on to an order after it’s out of the oven. • calling from a pay phone & unable to be reached in a locked bldg • leaving a voice mail on a cell phone every 3 mins. (”I don’t get a signal in here,” yet the b**** can call out to place an order!!) • constant callbacks/remakes (*best* week was $45 worth of remade wings and individual size thick crust “meat lovers” with xtra cheese) Just wondering.. is it just the indy hub, or are all postal workers making y’all go “postal?” that’s it for now. Later guys/gals! Current Mood: awake | | Thursday, June 2nd, 2005 | 1:37 pm [heywood417]

Ah...how could I forget... Delivery stories: yesterday I... 1) ...took a faceplant in someone's yard after tripping over their sidewalk and landed on my right hip, therein smashing the LCD screen on my cell phone AND leaving a cellphone shaped bruise on my hip. no joke. 2) ...delivered a pizza to Joe Horn, the posterboy for Saints football. And he tipped me $10 on a $30 order. Wow...he used to play for the Chiefs! I knew I liked him! :) | | Saturday, May 28th, 2005 | 9:45 pm [domar_nolo]

howdy.
I'm a pizza delivery driver in Owasso, Oklahoma for Papa John's, and I would have to say driving sucks dick with the way gas is going. I always get stuck with having to take deliveries at the edge of our area and end up making 50 cents in commission and a 32 cent tip. One time, I took a delivery to Butt fuck egypt and made it there less than 23 minutes after the order was placed..ole girl had THREE hot rods in her front drive way and managed about a twenty cent tip. People just suck sometimes, ya? |
